One minute past midnight

Evgeny Gorohovsky August 29, 2025 - November 01, 2025 pop/off/art 2.0 at Bolshoi Palashevsky lane, building 9.

About project

pop/off/art gallery presents the solo exhibition "One minute past midnight" by Evgeny Gorokhovsky—one of the founders of Russian photorealism. The exhibition will include works from the period of the formation of the artistic language of the master (1970s-1980s), as well as stills from the photo archive of the artist's family. The "One minute past midnight" project will be the introduction to a large retrospective exhibition by Evgeny Gorokhovsky, which will open in early autumn at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

One of the objectives of the project is to immerse the viewer in the history of the Gorokhovsky family, through the prism of which one can get the keys to understanding Evgeny's art. His father, Eduard Gorokhovsky (1929-2004), was one of the classics of unofficial art. The visual language of both authors was formed under the influence of Moscow conceptual art. At the same time, Evgeny's education took place in Novosibirsk, where he lived until 1982 and worked in local theaters—the Red Torch and the Young Spectator Theater.

In the works of the early period, which will be considered in the project, the direction of "mystical" realism, formulated by the artist, is emerging. They are evidence of the transition from a planar decorative technique ("Still Life with Fish", 1977; "Still Life with Flowers", 1979) to spatial mise-en-scènes, in which great attention is paid to the chiaroscuro structure ("May 10", 1980; "Bright Day", 1978). The starting point of the new stage can be considered the work "Moscow Courtyard" (1972), in which the plot component fades into the background, and all attention is paid to rhythm and compositional structure.

"One minute past midnight"—the name came intuitively, as a metaphor for the beginning of creativity—refers to the 1972 work presented at the exhibition. The exhibition will feature 15 paintings on paper or hardboard, painted from nature or photographs. They will be complemented and revealed to the viewer by the author's shots related to the biography and artistic searches of Evgeny Gorokhovsky, memories and stories about the characters and plots in the presented works.
