The Moscow Museum of Modern Art, in collaboration with the pop/off/art gallery, presents a retrospective exhibition, "Between the Concrete and the Infinite," by Evgeny Gorokhovsky, one of the leading exponents of photo- and hyperrealism, an artist whose work combines photographic precision, philosophical depth, and painterly freedom.

Evgeny Gorokhovsky inherited an interest in photographic images from his father, Eduard Gorokhovsky, a prominent master of unofficial art and creator of the famous photograms. However, Evgeny forged his own path, transforming photography into a starting point for reflecting on the boundaries of imagery. Evgeny Gorokhovsky's work unfolds in the space between photography and painting, between precision of recording and a desire to transcend the visible. Starting from the photograph, the artist creates complex compositions in which real images are combined with ornamental motifs, philosophical allusions, and references to the art of the past. For him, photography was not an endpoint, but a starting point—an opportunity to transform a specific moment into a reflection on time, memory, and presence.

The exhibition features over 70 works, including pieces from 15 Russian museum and private collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the New Aslan Chekhoev Museum, the V. I. Dahl Museum of Literature, and the collections of Yevgeny Nutovich, Yevgeny Khamin, and others. They will be organized as a retrospective, featuring Gorokhovsky's paintings and graphic works, numerous archival materials, and his personal belongings preserved by his family. The exhibition is divided into sections dedicated to the artist's early creative career, his works for the theater, his landscape observations, including a series of celestial studies, his fascination with Eastern culture (the East), his exploration of female identity, and the issue of ornament.

Evgeny Eduardovich Gorokhovsky (1951 - 2021) was born in Odessa to Eduard Gorokhovsky, an architect and later one of the most prominent Russian artists of the second half of the century. In 1973, he graduated from the production department of the Moscow Art Theatre School and worked in his field in Novosibirsk, where he spent his early years. He developed his artistic form in the 1970s, surrounded by the masters of the "other art" movement—Ilya Kabakov, Viktor Pivovarov, and Erik Bulatov. It was then that his distinctive style developed, merging photorealistic representation with metaphysical, conceptually reflective content. Evgeny Gorokhovsky became one of the founders of Russian photorealism (O. Kozlova, "Photorealism," Moscow, 1994), imbuing it with a distinctively philosophical dimension. The artist died on August 19, 2021.
