Signal System is the artist’s main discovery that took up an important place in the history of Russian art of the second half of the XX century. This system is based on the performative practice being inspired by scientific achievements of the epoch in the field of mathematics, cybernetics, and psychology.

The exhibition presents about 70 pieces from the Signal System series and about 2- Protosignals. The bulk of the works comes from the artist’s family collection, and 9 graphic pieces – from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery.

An important part of the project is archive documents containing manuscripts illustrated by Zlotnikov’s drawings. The exposition looks like a white cube with the ‘island’ in the center – a ‘study’ of the artist-theoretician, where there are manuscripts on the desks, podiums and in the windows: notebooks, printed pages, miniature drawings, charts and photos.

One of the events within the project will be a presentation of Zlotnikov’s book Signal System. The edition prepared specially for the display is based on the artist’s text where he gives a step-by- step description of his multiyear work on the creation of the cycle of works under the general title Signal System. This publication became possible through a huge effort made by Yuri Zlotnikov’s grandsons, Alexander and Andrey, who worked with the artist’s archives.
