In December 2024, the pop/off/art gallery at Winzavod will open an anniversary group exhibition, "Reflections" — the first in a series of several with which the institution celebrates its 20th anniversary. The curator of the project will be Sergey Popov, the founder and co-owner of the pop/off/art gallery, an art critic, and a specialist in Russian contemporary art. The project will bring together more than 20 works by 15 authors who address the phenomenon of the mirror. The viewer will get acquainted with the works of the artists of the pop/off/art gallery, as well as with the works of other key authors of different generations. The mirror as a media in contemporary art has gained incredible popularity in recent years. The "Reflections" project will be built through painting, sculpture, art objects, videos, and installations, in which the mirror will act as a material, an object of reflection, a metaphor, an instrument, and an object of research. "For me personally," says Sergey Popov, "this is a very personal statement: an opportunity to look at myself, at the path I have taken, at my interaction with the artistic environment, but most importantly, it is a conversation with the viewer who will come to the exhibition. This is, first and foremost, a viewer's, spectacular exhibition. And its idea is not that we all like to look in mirrors, but that mirrors give us a reason to think about ourselves and the world around us. How we look, what we want to see, what we think about ourselves - all these are not idle questions. These are questions that artists have been asking themselves for many years." On the one hand, the works with mirrors will become a metaphor for the gallery's reflections on its path. On the other hand, they will remind us of the important task of art - to be a reflection of the era. Finally, the works will emphasize the dialogue between the viewer and art. From this point of view, the exhibition "Reflections" is a digest of mirrors in the top league of Russian contemporary art; mirrors that refract the universe in very different ways. Reflecting in each other, the mirrors create a complex, multiplying image, in which there is room for reflections on life and death, on the present moment and the long term, on the transient existence of things, on joy and anxiety, on emptiness, in the end.
The exhibition will feature the series "Return of Time" (1998) by Vladimir Kupriyanov, whose retrospective exhibition was held this fall at MMOMA, video documentation of Yuri Albert's project "Ballet Class with Crooked Mirrors" (2013), as well as two of his works from the series "I'm Still Alive" (2018). Pavel Pepperstein's installation "Here is Only the Back of Mirrors" (2006/2024) will be recreated especially for the project. The exhibition will be enhanced by new works by Vitaly Pushnitsky, Olga and Oleg Tatarintsev, and a large-scale installation by Vasily Kononov-Gredin. Key and characteristic works by Vika Begalskaya and Alexander Vilkin, Irina Korina, and Evgeny Granilshchikov will be presented. The project will also include works by young contemporary authors: Asya Zaslavskaya, Sergey Kolosov, Alexandra Pavlovskaya, and Sasha Puchkova.
