Both are white

Vladimir Potapov September 12, 2023 - October 15, 2023 pop/off/art, Москва

pop/off/art gallery presents a personal exhibition of Vladimir Potapov, a key Russian artist of the middle generation, "Both are White". The total installation, which will unfold in the space of the gallery, will be a three-part chronological statement addressed to the theme of perception of political history and reflection on the present. The name of the project refers to the psychological experiment of the same name conducted in the USSR in the 70s.

The exhibition will feature new canvases from the "White Series" and works made from burnt paper, which go beyond the recognizable method of working on a work, allowing us to call this project an important milestone in the development of the artistic language of Vladimir Potapov.

The starting point of the statement will be the works from the 2014 Manifestation project, in which the author points to hidden political and social processes that may manifest themselves in the future. The motif of the manifestation of the hidden, the "tearing off the masks" will be continued in a bold artistic gesture - in the decision to 'destroy' the walls of the gallery in order to expose the historical architecture, get rid of neutral structures that are convenient for most and give voice to the "White Series", the plots of which are composed by removing fragments of primer from canvas surfaces. The characteristic coloristic solution in the burnt paper works, as well as in the White Series, is dictated by the author's rejection of color as a reaction to reality.
