If barking sounds

Anna Afonina July 06, 2022 - August 21, 2022 pop/off/art, Moscow

pop/off/art gallery presents the project of one of the brightest artists of the young generation Anna Afonina, “If barking sounds”. This is the artist's first solo exhibition at pop/off/art gallery. Afonina addresses the phenomenon of hybrid subjectivity: a concept from political theory that describes the relationship between subjects and the constant change of active roles between them. New objects and paintings are appealing to subject-object relations on the example of the interaction between a hunter and a victim.

The artist paints different entities that communicate with each other through external reincarnations. Thus, the active role of this or that subject is masked: the role of hunter and prey is constantly changing. The effect of constant transformation is created largely due to the unique plasticity and sense of color in Afonina's painting. An important exposition decision of the project will be the light in the gallery. The recognizable pictorial language of Afonina will be enhanced by new ways for the artist to work with space. It will be flooded with light of different shades, which, along with bright spray paints on canvas, will become another tool that hides from the viewer the true nature of a particular creature.
