Gallery pop/off/art Moscow - Berlin presents a solo exhibition by the Moscow artist Kirill Chelushkin. The artist, who is primarily known for his own art form – videos sculpture, this time presents himself in a more traditional manner: offering us a series of tough, huge drawings, brought together by a number of themes in a fascinating hyperrealist style. This exhibition will be his first full-fledged project in Moscow after a five-year hiatus, before this the artist was working with galleries in other cities in Russia and around the world.
At first glance, this project involves works that seem to be without a coherent idea, united only by the striking visual style of the author. Monumentality is one of the key tools of the artist. Chelushkin does not skimp on size – his canvases are always about two meters tall. Such size is relevant to human height. Chelushkin’s canvases are actively engaged in dialogue with the viewer, invading their personal space and demanding immediate answer.
The bright visual qualities of the work bring about a certain emotional intensity. The heroes of his works always seem to be pushing the boundaries. The study of limits and boundaries is one of the aims in the creation of such works of art. The limit of human capabilities, emotions and inner strength – are all questions posed by the author. In today's blinkered, prudish society Chelushkin addresses the most natural, even basic human instincts, exposing the essence of the person, thus presenting it to the public. Chelushkin’s talent is the ability not to succumb to the convention, while retaining his humanity.
Kirill Chelushkin was born in Abramtzevo Moscow region in 1968. In 1994 he graduated from Moscow Architectural Institute. It is there that he began to take part in art exhibitions. Chelushkin’s notoriety came from a number of solo exhibitions, the most significant of which were held at the Museum of Architecture, regional Russian museums, and participation in major international exhibitions and biennials. Currently the artist lives and works in Moscow and Paris. His works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), Museum Ludwig (Cologne, Germany), The Museum of Art (Bolzano, Italy), The Museum of Art Itsibashi (Tokyo, Japan), some Russian regional museums, and in private and corporate collections in Russia and around the world.
