Anatoly Osmolovsky

«Adoration»

Objects

15 December – 31 January / 2008

Each of Anatoly Osmolovsky’s exhibitions is an event. The new project of the well-known artist and theoretician, the first laureate of the “Kandinsky Prize”, a participant of the most significant world exhibitions, in his day – a flamboyant radical-demonstrator, and today – a recognised authority in the research of artistic form, is being shown in the pop/off/art Gallery. The exhibited series of objects develops the images on which Osmolovsky has been working over recent years – a flat wooden sculpture covered with a thin and complex carving which was not made in a wave of improvisation, but using precisely calculated principles connected with structures of symmetry and the evolution of organic form.

The previous works, well known to the viewers under the title of “Bread” – were shown in the exhibition “I Believe” in “Vinzavod”, in the exhibition “Document” in Kassel and within the framework of the international tour of the “Kandinsky Prize” exhibition. The current few series of objects, from the monumental to the chamber, are united by the title “Adoration” and are devoted to the study of the sacral nature of the origin of form in visual art. Osmolovsky’s project, a part of which makes up this exhibition, removes the “duality”, contradiction (customary for the perceiver’s consciousness): between the spiritual and the profane, between the abstract and the figurative, between the mechanical and the hand-made, between the three dimensional and the plane. Genuinely innovatory, based on the study of the age-old principles of visual culture, simultaneously metaphorical and sharp – he, in fact, represents one of the breakthroughs of new Russian art on an international scale.
