GRIGORY MAIOFIS

«Pictures for interiors»

Painting. Photo.

1-27 October 2007

Fragment of an interior in style of a baroque

The exhibition in the pop/off/art Gallery is actually Grigory Maiofis’ first serious solo show in Moscow. (Born in 1970). In spite of this, the name of the Petersburg master is well known in the capital, and not only the Russian one: the tremendous success of his photographs, for several years in succession, at the Art-Moscow fairs, his participation in a series of international fairs and large exhibitions, the inclusion of his work in collections of authoritative museums (The Museum of the Arts, Los Angeles, The Art Museum of Santa Barbara, The Moscow Museum of Modern Art) and private collections, finally, being awarded the prestigious prize "Betty and Jim Kasson Award" (2006) for the series "Sayings" placed him amongst the most noted Russian artists of the present time.

The exhibition has the unpretentious title of "Pictures for interiors", but the viewer will find complex, ironic works, full of subtexts and citations. They are intended as pictures for supposed interiors (for example, "Allegory for the interior of a PR Agency", "Picture for the bedroom", "Picture in a Jewish home"), which is amusing in itself; however all of these are, of course, the clever and not in the least trivial metaphors of the artist who harmonises the absurdity of the everyday with all the accumulated "thermonuclear" arsenal of Post-Modernism.
