KAWARGA

«The Trepanation of thought-forms»

Sculpture, installation, photography

18 December 2007 – 26 January 2008

The pop/off/art gallery presents the new project of Dmitri Kawarga, one of the main heroes of the most recent Russian art, gained fame by his victory at the monument to Yeltsin competition, – the first independent Russian monument competition, organised by the Contemporary Art Museum ART4.RU (Kawarga is also the author of one of the Museum's window displays).

The project consists of exhibitions at two sites and is displaying objects and installations in the Gallery and photographs in the Business Centre. In the landscape of contemporary art Kawarga's style is unique. The artist calls it "biomorphic radicalism", and with this emphasises primarily the remoteness from the usual forms of artistic radicalism – political, religious and so on. In reality his art combines the various spheres of culture and manifestations of life. It reacts equally to the diversity of natural forms and scientific discoveries, to the communication activity of civilisation and traditions of Avant-garde art of the last century.

Kawarga's works are synthetic objects in that sense which had already been laid down by the geniuses of the Russian Avant-garde, but which is practically unknown to our art of recent years. These are active, usually three-dimensional forms, cast from polymeric compounds, – figurative or at times completely devoid of concreteness, as if growing out of painting, but moving anew into flatness now as photo-objects (the author finishes each print by hand). Moreover, – they produce sounds or come into contact with the viewer using complex, individual algorithms.
