Andrey Grositsky

«Props»

23 March – 11 April / 2009

painting, mixed technique

Surprising as it may seem, “Props” is Andrey Grositsky’s first solo exhibition in the pop/off/art Gallery, which has presented the artist in recent years and was also the organiser of his retrospective in the State Tretyakov Gallery (2007). Grositsky is one of the most highly recognized masters of the contemporary art generation; the creator of his own painting poetics of the object, unique, on the scale of the whole of the XXth century. The depiction of the world of objects in his presentation – is actually a separate genre, equally distant from the classical still-life and from “trash” object-collage, which has occupied such an extensive place in the history of the newest art.

The art of Andrey Grositsky at times is identified with “Russian Pop-art”. This assertion is questionable, but, be that as it may, the whole process of Russian post-war art is reflected in his personality – from the interest in Cezanne-ism in the 60s through new objectivity to his own form of communicating reality, which the art critic Sergey Popov called “simulation realism”. In spite of the constancy of the single line of imagery over a few decades, each of Grositsky’s paintings is perceived afresh – unexpected turns in his generally recognizable style await the viewer in this exhibition as well, where approximately a dozen large-format canvases from 2007 – 2009 and a series of small-format works will be presented.
